Freeview HD•Antenna (aerial) recommendations

So I've got one of those "fishbone" type aerials on my roof .. will that do?

I can receive some Freeview channels .. but TV3 seems to struggle . .I'm currently using an HP laptop for testing

I think the 'wishbone' antennas are VHF antennas, but FreeviewHD is all in the UHF band. You want one that looks like a 'Sky UHF' aerial (maybe you can get one for free of someone who has switched from that to 'Sky Digital'. I've seen new ones at DSE for only $70 or so, but the mounting hardware and cable will add up to another $40 or so.

Ah 'fishbone' yes thats a UHF antenna. perfect. I was thinking of the old style antenna with the big loops bent forward.

Had another thought. you say TV3 is struggling - I assume you mean the digital version. The anenna might be pointing at wherever 'Sky UHF' is/was broadcast from, which may not be where TV3(digital) is broadcast from. Have a look here http://www.lincrad.co.nz/transmittersites.html

Is normal (analog) TV reception pretty good there? If not you will need to buy a UHF antenna with many (eg 91) elements - ie a long one! An old SkyUHF antenna would be perfect. Otherwise a short one with 34 or 20 elements would be fine.
